Five WhatsApp groups moderated by long-term Boquete residents. Whoever you are, whenever you arrive, a community is already waiting. You will never stay alone in the highlands.

Back in early 2024, a few of us sitting at a table outside a cafe on the Boquete town park realised something simple: most of our best memories in the highlands started with a stranger saying hi on a trail. So we started a WhatsApp group called "Boquete Welcome" and added anyone we met who was new in town.
Within a couple of months it was 60 people, then more than the one group could hold comfortably. Hikers wanted trail-condition talk. Coffee people wanted farm-tour meetups. Retirees wanted honest doctor referrals. The one group became two, then three, then five.
Five WhatsApp communities, each capped around 250 members, each moderated by 2 to 3 long-term Boquete residents. When you reach out, a human reads your message, checks which group fits, and adds you. We do not use bots, we do not sell numbers, we do not run ads in the chats.
It is a labor of love, paid for by the occasional cafe that sponsors a members-only cupping night and by a small number of members who buy us coffee when they can. That is it.
A small rotating team of moderators across Alto Boquete, Bajo Boquete and Palmira. Some of us have been in Boquete 5+ years, some arrived in the last year. We are not a business. We do not have an office. We meet for lunch every few weeks at a different fonda to keep sane.
